This shows the southern façade of the early nineteenth century building, with five bays of yellow brick on a red brick plinth, and with the rear bay also of red brick.

It is hard to believe that Market Stainton was important enough to hold a market.

Henry Thorold* described St. Michael's as a "most endearing little medieval church of greenstone patched with brick" - it is now sad and decaying, disused and, judging by the unswept porch, unloved.

Kelly's Directory of Lincolnshire 1919 states

"The church of St. Michael is a small but ancient building of stone, in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel and nave and a massive embattled western tower with four pinnacles, containing 3 bells:

the church was reseated and restored internally in 1886 and again in 1909-10 at a cost of about £1,000, at the sole expense of Lieut. Col. C.J.B. Parker J.P. of Stonebridge, Grantham:

there are 80 sittings.

The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1689; marriages, 1690"

The church is currently being offered for sale with a guide price of £20,000. The property Brochure in part states :-

"A small ancient church in the 13th century decorated style with a western perpendicular style 14th century tower.

The church underwent a major Victorian restoration, from which a majority of the windows date, with a notable feature of the quadripartite rib vaulted ceiling to the chancel dating from 1848"

"The church has been formally closed for regular public worship by a Pastoral Scheme made by the Church Commissioners in May 2011.

Once a use has been found, a further Pastoral (Church Buildings Disposal) Scheme will be needed to permit the sale. The retained churchyard will remain in use for burials and the interment of ashes"

Royal Air Force grave on north side of church.

Warrant Officer F.F.Allcock died 1950.

From 1943 to 1948 the RAF operated an ammunition depot, RAF Market Stainton.

There were few gravestones in the extensive southern area of the graveyard. They have been amassed in the area to the north of the nave where the larger number of headstones and railed graves were already located.

Village green, seen on the right in this image, is presumably where the market was held.

Kelly's Directory of Lincolnshire 1889 states :-

"This village had anciently a weekly market and a yearly fair; the former has long since been lost and the latter was sold for £200, and removed to Horncastle in 1768.

Jonathan Field esq. B.A. of Laceby, who is lord of the manor, and William Hyde esq. J.P. of The Sycamores, Louth, are sole landowners"
